Cupping therapy in Maple Ridge to ease muscle tension.

Cupping uses gentle suction to lift and mobilize soft tissue, and may be combined with massage or other hands-on care to help ease muscle tension and support recovery.

About the treatment

What is cupping therapy?

Cupping therapy uses cups — usually silicone, plastic or glass — to create gentle suction on the skin. The suction lifts the skin and underlying soft tissue, the opposite of the pressing used in most massage, and is used to help ease muscle tension and tightness.

Cups may be left in place for a few minutes (static cupping) or glided across the skin with oil or lotion (dynamic or sliding cupping). Cupping in a massage or rehab setting is dry cupping, meaning the skin is not broken, and it is usually combined with massage or other hands-on treatment.

Research on cupping is still developing. Some studies suggest it may help with neck and low back pain, but the overall quality of the evidence is low, so it is best thought of as one tool that some people find helpful, used alongside other care.

What treatment may include

  • Static cupping

Cups placed and left on an area for a few minutes.

  • Dynamic (sliding) cupping

Cups glided over oiled skin to work across larger muscle groups.

  • Cupping with massage

Cupping added to a massage session, before or after hands-on work.

  • Movement with cups

Gentle movement of the area while cups are in place, where appropriate.

Before your visit

Good to know.

  • Cupping often leaves round red or purple marks. They are not usually painful and typically fade within a week or two.
  • If marks would be a problem for an upcoming event, such as a wedding or a swim meet, plan your session around it.
  • Cupping is not done over broken, irritated or sunburned skin, varicose veins, or areas of recent injury.
  • Tell your practitioner if you take blood thinners, bruise easily, are pregnant, or have a skin or bleeding condition.
