About the treatment

About orthotics, bracing and compression

Orthotics, braces and compression garments are supports that change how load passes through a joint or limb, or help manage swelling. They are usually one part of a plan that also includes exercise and treatment, rather than a replacement for it.

Foot orthotics are inserts worn in your shoes. Off-the-shelf options suit many people, while custom orthotics are made from a three-dimensional impression or scan of your foot after a biomechanical and gait assessment. Braces support joints such as the knee, ankle or wrist during recovery or activity, and compression garments apply graduated pressure, most often to the legs, to support circulation and manage swelling.

Many extended health plans cover custom orthotics and some braces or compression garments, but most have specific requirements — often a prescription from a physician or podiatrist that names the diagnosis, and a gait assessment on file. Check your plan before you book so the paperwork is right the first time.

What treatment may include

  • Biomechanical assessment

A look at your foot posture, joint alignment, and how you walk or run, to understand where extra load is coming from.

  • Custom orthotics

Inserts made from a 3D impression or scan of your feet, for when an off-the-shelf option is not enough.

  • Off-the-shelf supports

Ready-made orthotics and braces, which are often a good first step.

  • Bracing

Knee, ankle, wrist and other braces to support a joint during recovery or activity.

  • Compression garments

Graduated compression socks or sleeves, chosen in the right size and pressure level for your needs.

Before your visit

Good to know.

  • Bring the shoes you wear most, including work and sport shoes, to your assessment.
  • Check your extended health plan first: many need a prescription with a diagnosis before they cover custom orthotics or compression garments.
  • New orthotics are usually worn in gradually over a week or two.
  • Compression should feel firm but not painful. Take it off and let us know if you notice numbness, colour changes or skin irritation.
  • If you have diabetes, circulation problems or reduced feeling in your feet, mention it at your assessment.
